The Beauty of Can Tho
Have you ever found yourself wondering why some cities leave such a lasting impression on everyone who visits them? Imagine a place where rivers sparkle, fruits are fresh, people always smile, and culture flows as naturally as water. That place is Cần Thơ, the biggest city of the Mekong Delta in Vietnam.
The purpose of my presentation today is to introduce you to Can Tho, a city that blends tradition with development, and beauty with hospitality.
As a student who has studied Vietnamese culture and geography, I’ve come across many fascinating facts about Can Tho. And today, I’d like to share them with you in a simple, structured way.
Here’s what I’ll cover in my presentation:
-
First, I’ll give you an overview of Can Tho’s history and reputation.
-
Then, I’ll highlight its cultural and natural attractions.
-
Finally, I’ll talk about its location and climate.
So let’s begin by exploring the first point.
First Point: Overview and Reputation of Can Tho
Can Tho (also spelled Cantho; Vietnamese: Cần Thơ) is the biggest city of the Mekong Delta, with a population of about 1.5 million people as of 2012.
The city has a reputation for being one of the most welcoming places in Vietnam. People here are known for their smiles and hospitality. There’s even a famous saying:
“Cần Thơ, white rice, clear waters,
All who come wish never to leave.”
This phrase perfectly captures the city’s charm. Interestingly, the name Can Tho is said to come from “cầm thi giang”, meaning river of poems. It is also known as “Tây Đô”, which translates to Western Capital.
Although Can Tho has been developing fast—around 10% growth per year since 2004—it still retains its unique charm as the cultural and economic center of a rural region. Its urban development is growing, but in an orderly and balanced way.
Second Point: Cultural and Natural Attractions
Can Tho is famous for many unique experiences and attractions:
-
Floating markets: These are perhaps the most iconic images of the city. Boats filled with fresh produce float on the river, creating a colorful and lively scene.
-
Buddhist pagodas: Spiritual and historical sites where visitors can learn about local religion and architecture.
-
Delicious food and fresh fruits: Can Tho lies in the heart of the Mekong Delta, known as the “rice bowl” of Vietnam. The food here is rich, flavorful, and always fresh.
-
The beauty of the Mekong Delta: Surrounded by rivers and canals, Can Tho showcases the peaceful lifestyle of southern Vietnam.
These attractions make Can Tho not just a city, but also a cultural experience.
Third Point: Location and Climate
Can Tho is located on the south bank of the Hậu River, the biggest branch of the Mekong River.
It is also conveniently connected to nearby cities:
-
Close to Sóc Trăng
-
1.5 hours from Long Xuyen
-
3 hours from Châu Đốc and Rạch Giá
-
6 hours from Cà Mau
-
And about 169 km (3 hours) from Ho Chi Minh City
The climate of Can Tho is tropical and monsoonal. It has two distinct seasons:
-
The rainy season from May to November
-
The dry season from December to April
On average, Can Tho has:
-
Annual humidity of about 83%
-
Rainfall of 1,635 mm
-
Temperature around 27°C
This means the weather is warm and humid almost all year round, which is perfect for growing fruit and rice.
Let’s quickly recap what we’ve discussed today.
-
First, we looked at Can Tho’s overview, history, and welcoming reputation.
-
Second, we explored its cultural and natural attractions like floating markets, pagodas, food, and the Mekong Delta.
-
Finally, we talked about its location, connections, and tropical climate.
What I hope you take away from this is that Can Tho is not just a city, but a symbol of the spirit of the Mekong Delta. It represents hospitality, tradition, and natural beauty, while also embracing growth and development.
The key message I want to leave you with is this: If you ever visit Vietnam, Can Tho is a city that you should not miss. Its rivers, culture, and people will make you feel at home, and you may find yourself wishing never to leave.
